Getting Married in Ecuador as an Expat

Requirements to get married in Ecuador as an expat.

If you are planning on getting married in Ecuador, you will need the following documents:

• Single Status Certificate (Can be obtained from the Vital Records or County Clerk’s office in your home country). 


• Divorce Decree (Latest divorce), If applicable. 


• If widowed, the spouse’s death certificate is required. 


• Updated Migratory Record obtained in Ecuador 


• Legal stay in Ecuador (Tourist Visa, Extension Tourist visa, Temporary Residency Visa, or Permanent 
Residency Visa). 
All documents from abroad must be apostilled in the country where they were issued; these should not be older than 90 days from the date of issuance. 
Marrying an Ecuadorian citizen 
The following documents will be required. 


• A valid cédula (Ecuadorian ID Card) 


• If divorced, must provide the updated divorce decree issued by the court and the divorce registration issued by 
the civil registry office. 


• The divorce must have occurred at least 1 year before entering into the new marriage. 


• If either the groom or bride has children under 18 years born in Ecuador to one or both parties, a "Curador" is 
required, this individual oversees the children's well-being. This process must be approved by the Court as a family law case. Our office attorney staff can assist with this process for an additional fee. 
Marriages in Ecuador take place in the main cities: Quito, Guayaquil (Registro Civil Municipal), or Cuenca. Schedule in an specify date dependents on available appointments. 
Fees:

Government fees for marriage: $50 at the Civil Registration office;if you choose different location other than the Civil Registry office the fee is $250. 


• New cedula for Ecuadorian Citizens $16 


• Apostille USA documents $140 per document 


• Courier fee $70 


Document Translation by a court approved translator, plus an Ecuadorian Notary Certification $45(this fee may 
vary depending on the number of pages of the document).
