When Should I Begin the Visa Application Process?
For an optimal experience, it's advisable to start the process about a year in advance of your intended move to Colombia. This lead time allows ample room to secure your visa ahead of your departure, ensuring you have it in hand well before boarding your flight.
Typically, the standard recommendation is to initiate preparations 2 to 3 months prior to your planned relocation to Colombia. The visa application process is handled entirely online through the Cancillería, eliminating the need for in-person appointments. However, timing your documents carefully is critical — apostilled documents are only valid for 90 days, meaning you cannot start too early or too late. The most time-consuming step is usually obtaining your FBI Background Check apostille, which can take over two months due to current backlogs in the United States. Once all documents are apostilled and translated into Spanish, the Colombian government typically responds to visa applications within 30 days. For best results, aim to submit your application by day 60 of your documents' validity window to ensure everything remains valid through the approval process.
